This book is written to conclude the NATO Advanced Research Workshop "Quantum Noise in Mesoscopic Physics" held in Delft, the Netherlands, on June 2-4, 2002. The workshop was co-directed by M. Reznikov of Israel Institute of Technology, and me.

The research of the Atomic, Mesoscopic and Optical Physics Group (AMOP) is centred on the development of understanding of quantum aspects of condensed matter, from atomic Bose-Einstein condensates to semiconductor quantum dots and defects in solids. •Mesoscopic PhysicsPhysics of small condensed objects (a collection of atoms) •Often in the nanometer-size regime ! discipline of “Nanoscience” 3 • Introduction: Nanoscience and Mesoscopic Physics. Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Why increasing interest for the nanoscale?

Mesoscopic physics addresses fundamental physical problems which occur when a macroscopic object is miniaturized. The field originated some ten years ago, motivated largely by the electronics industry. As you know, that industry makes money out of the miniaturization of transistors, which switch the electrical current on a computer chip. Mesoscopic physics subdiscipline of condensed-matter physics that focuses on the properties of solids in a size range intermediate between bulk matter and individual atoms or molecules. This size range is the stage on which the exciting new research on submicroscopic and electronic and mechanical devices is being done. Mesoscopic physics is a subdiscipline of condensed matter physics that deals with materials of an intermediate size. These materials range in size between the nanoscale for a quantity of atoms (such as a molecule) and of materials measuring micrometres. [citation needed] The lower limit can also be Mesoscopic physics studies objects that lie between the worlds of classical and quantum mechanics, objects usually large enough to be visible in an optical microscope, but small enough to have properties exhibiting the wavelike, nonlocal, and coherent behavior that are signatures of the quantum world. Introduction : mesoscopic physics 1.1 Interference and disorder Wave propagation in a random medium is a phenomenon common to many areas of physics.
